Mindfulness is the practice and discipline of being mentally present in each moment – being present in each situation and to each person you are with, first and foremost yourself. C.S. Lewis once referred to the “twin thieves” of regret about the past and worry about the future. Both are a recipe for anxiety and even panic. The point of learning to be mindful in each moment is to avoid the twin thieves and to experience joy, peace, and even bliss in the simplest of things: the spray of an orange as you peel it, paying attention to the flavors as you eat it, taking note of the beautiful design of the outer peel and the white on the inside. The good reality is that when you are fully present to what is in front of you in each moment, you can’t also be present to the twin thieves – it will be much easier to feel joy and peace and more difficult to be distracted by anxiety when you learn the practice of living and being present in each moment. This book will teach you strategies towards reducing stress (and anxiety) by becoming increasingly mindful of what is right in front of you.
